Happy New Years! I f you are like most people, I bet you made some New Year’s resolutions. The New Year is always a great time for a restart and to make new goals.  But it can seem a bit daunting or overwhelming only after a short amount of time into January! Here are some ways to keep those intentions:

Start Small

Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.

Change one behavior at a time

Bad habits develop over a long amount of time, so replacing them with good ones will not just happen overnight! If you focus on one behavior at a time, you will not feel so overwhelmed and will therefore be more successful! Try working on one behavior for a certain amount of time, such as drinking no soda for one week, and then after a successful week to can focus on the next behavior.

Talk about it

Did you know if you voice your goals you are more likely to keep them? Its true! Also by voicing them you might find someone else who wants to achieve the same thing and you can work on encouraging each other and keeping each other accountable. Use family gatherings or even social media to let people what you are working on!

Don’t beat yourself up

Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track.

Here’s to a new year and to all of us meeting our goals! We can do it!
